Mounting Options

STORM SHIELD Hurricane Barriers have one of two mounting options, either Face Mount or Inset Mount.

Face Mount

A Face Mount unit is attached to the building outside of the window pocket. This type of unit is used when less than 3" of separation exists between the glass of the window and the screen of the desired STORM SHIELD unit. In addition, a Face Mount unit must have 3" of space between the window pocket and the nearest trim or obstruction on each side of the window.

Inset Mount

An Inset Mount unit is attached to the building's window reveal. In this case, at least 3" of separation does exist between the glass of the window and the screen of the desired STORM SHIELD unit.

How to Measure for the Right Option

  1. Measure the depth from the face of the glass to the outside face of the wall. If there is at least 3" between the glass and where the barrier screen would sit inside the reveal, an inset mount is possible.
  2. If the reveal is shallow, or the window sits nearly flush with the wall, plan for a face mount.
  3. For a face mount, check that there are at least 3" of clear wall on each side of the window pocket before the nearest trim, downspout or other obstruction.
  4. Note the wall material (concrete block, poured concrete, wood frame, brick veneer), because it affects the anchors used by the installer.

Inset mounts keep the barrier inside the window opening and give a cleaner look on deep masonry walls. Face mounts cover the whole opening from outside and are often simpler on retrofit projects. For complete details, request specifications or see product details.
