Side Hinge see-thru hurricane barriers on the windows of an office building

Side Hinge

STORM SHIELD Hurricane Barriers can be fitted with two side hinges to allow access for cleaning and maintenance purposes. Side hinged units are secured with stainless steel securing pins, positioned on the inside or outside of the unit. Side hinged units can also be fitted with a lock to allow only authorized personnel to access the unit.

Side Hinge at a Glance

  • Two side hinges let the barrier swing open like a door
  • Secured with stainless steel securing pins, inside or outside the unit
  • Optional lock limits access to authorized personnel
  • Stays in place year round as a see-thru security and sun screen
  • Available as a face mount or an inset mount

Why Hinged Access Matters

A barrier that stays on the building all year still needs to let people reach the window. Glass must be cleaned, window frames and sealants inspected, and occasionally a pane replaced. With a Side Hinge barrier, maintenance staff simply remove the securing pins, swing the barrier open, complete the work and pin it closed again. There is no need to unbolt panels or store them, and the barrier is back in its protective position in minutes.

Hinged access is especially useful on large commercial and institutional buildings, where many identical openings need routine care, and on homes where owners want to open a window behind the barrier for fresh air while keeping the security of a screen.

Need an Emergency Exit?

A standard Side Hinge unit is opened by removing pins. If the opening must be usable as an emergency exit, choose Side Hinge with Security Egress, which adds a single point panic release latch. For openings where a hinge on the side is not practical, the Top Hinge style opens upward instead. Our hurricane shutter maintenance guide covers what to inspect on hinged barriers each year.
